Small Groups

The Christian life was not meant to be lived alone! At Sunbury United Methodist Church, we believe the Christian life is a journey in which we grow in our faith by knowing, loving and serving God with others. We encourage you to participate in a TLC small group or be a part of one of our many exciting small group ministries.

TLC Groups (Touching Lives for Christ)

Currently, there are more than 100 people in our church participating in 12 TLC groups. These groups meet regularly to accomplish the 4 W’s of small group ministry.

Welcome–as we gather we check in with each other to see how everyone is doing.

Worship–a time of music, inspirational thought and prayer.

Word–We study the Bible through books, DVDs or other current Christian resources.

Witness–each group is to plan and implement a ministry. As we minister together, we witness to the love of God in our lives and help build the Kingdom of God one person at a time.

Contact Monica Swank if you are interested in learning more about any of our small groups.

Sunday School and Bible Studies

Two adult Sunday school classes are held at 9:30 a.m., and Bible studies are offered throughout the week and on Sunday mornings.

Emmaus Share Groups

These small groups of 3-5 people meet throughout the week, usually at the church, and are composed of people who have gone on a Walk to Emmaus, a three-day spiritual retreat. There are both men’s groups and women’s groups.

The Walk to Emmaus gets its name from the story in Luke 24:13-35, which provides the central image for the three-day experience and follow-up. Luke tells the story of that first Easter afternoon when the risen Christ appeared to the two disciples who were walking together along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus.

The Emmaus Walk begins Thursday evening and concludes Sunday evening. Men and women attend separate weekends. After the three days, participants are encouraged to meet regularly in small groups. The members of the small groups challenge and support one another in faithful living. Participants seek to bring God into their everyday environment of family, job, and community through the ministry of their congregations.

The three-day Emmaus experience and follow-up share groups strengthen and renew Christian people as disciples of Jesus Christ and as active members of the body of Christ in mission to the world.

Quilting Groups

Our Quilting Ministry meets on the first and third Tuesdays from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. Quilts are made with love for our Prayer Shawl ministry, the Worthington Children's Home, Flatrock Children's Home, and Central Ohio House of Hope. No experience is needed.

The Piece Corps was started 27 years ago here at SUMC. We meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday mornings of each month from 9:00-11:00. In addition, we meet the last Thursday of the month for a QUAD (quilt all day). All of the activities take place in room 10-11. We usually have a program, a demonstration, or a learning activity. Occasionally we take a field trip to see a quilt show or shop instead of meeting at the church. All quilters are welcome to join us.

The PIECEkeepers meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday evenings here at SUMC. Members bring their projects to work on and enjoy chatting and sewing. We meet from 7-9 in room . All quilters are welcome to join us.

The Crazy Quilters meet each Monday morning at 10 to work on projects and enjoy visiting. We are usually at the church but occasionally take a field trip so call before you come.

O.W.L.S. (Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors) is a social group for those 55 or older. The group meets the first Friday of each month in the SUMC Dining Room for a potluck lunch, hosted by two members of the group, with games and crafts afterwards. The group also takes occasional trips to places of interest.

Scrap & Share

This scrapbooking group meets once a month throughout the year on Friday or Saturday. Participants usually bring and snack to share and gather to work on  scrapbooking or other projects while enjoying fellowship and food.
