Good Friday commemorates Jesus’ death on the cross. It may seem strange to call such a horrific day a “good Friday.” Jesus was condemned, beaten, mocked, humiliated, and beaten more. A Roman crucifixion by the cross was a horrendous death filled with excruciating pain. We call it Good Friday, however, because we celebrate on the other side of Easter (Jesus’ resurrection). It is Good Friday because Jesus went to the cross to give the most generous and gracious gift ever given in all of history. He died on the cross to sacrifice himself and atone for the sins of the world. Because Jesus went to the cross, sin can be washed away and forgiven for all those who come to him and follow him. For in accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior we accept grace–and our sins are covered by his holiness.
Why do we need forgiveness and grace? Because the wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23) and we all have sinned. We all have sinned, and sin separates us from a Holy God. Sin and holiness cannot be together and “without holiness we will no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14). We cannot save ourselves and therefore need a Savior. Jesus is our Savior. And on Good Friday, we celebrate that he laid down his life for us so that we may live in eternity.
Join us this Good Friday, April 7, at 7:00 p.m. We would love to worship with you!
